Nursery Schools provide early learning through play
Preschools have been around for a while but nursery schools
have become the latest trend popping up throughout the country.
Specializing in early education, these schools often take babies as
young as 6-weeks-old.
One of the differences between a nursery school and a traditional day
care is that the nursery school provides a more structured and busy
day. Many children thrive in this institutionalized environment,
particularly if they start young.
With so many different schools available, it’s a good idea to spend
some time visiting various places before choosing one.Ask if you can
sit in and observe for a morning. What is the staff’s response? Are you
made to feel welcome or would they prefer parents don’t visit? If
that’s the case - look elsewhere. During your time there watch
individual children. Are they wandering about without a purpose? How
does the staff speak to them? If the children are hurt or upset, how is
it dealt with? What about discipline policies? How much supervision is
provided?
Make sure you choose a licensed nursery and don’t assume that a long
waiting list necessarily means it’s a good school. The same thing with
price - expensive does not always reflect quality. Find out about staff
qualifications and how high the turnover is. Use the above questions as
a guide when you visit the various schools to determine which one is
right for you and your child.
Look for happy children and a clean, safe environment. It’s also
important the school has a bright, cheery and relaxed atmosphere. It
should provide activities that are structured while promoting fun,
friendship, sharing, stories and songs through play. Above all, trust
your own instincts. If you feel something is wrong chances are, it
is.
